October’s Awesome Socks and Undies Artist is anything but ghoulish

We’re frightfully excited to share October’s Awesome Socks & Undies artist, Abeeha Tariq (she/her)! Abeeha is a Pakistani-Irish illustrator based in Edinburgh and a self-taught artist who began working professionally in 2021. Since then, she’s brought her work to children’s publications and projects for Scholastic, Little Tiger, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, Hachette, Gill Books, and more. We’re thrilled to have her adding a little illustration magic to your sock drawer!

An Interview With Awesome Socks Club's October Artist

In a sentence, how would you describe your work? 

My work is playful and whimsical, featuring diverse characters, vibrant colours, graphic shapes and textures. 

Do you have any favorite themes you enjoy working with?

I enjoy creating art that features magic and fairytales. I also love creating Halloween-themed art and drawing fashionable outfits and characters.

What mediums do you like to work in?

I primarily work digitally, but I also enjoy using traditional pencil, gouache, coloured pencils and ink. 

As an artist, are there any tools that you would perish if you left the house without them?

My sketchbook, my pencil case, and snacks!

Do you have a dream project you'd like to work on someday?

I would love to illustrate a beautiful, whimsical book of fairytales!

What drew you to the imagery of your sock design?

I always love creating Halloween-themed art so I envisioned this little group with different accessories. 

Can you talk a little about your design process? Where do you draw your inspiration from, and how do you workshop your design from draft to final?

I have previously created art featuring some colourful and eccentric characters, so I decided to focus on a similar idea for my sock design. I drew inspiration from the people I see all around me, with various accessories and personalities. 

I started by sketching a rough design just to see how it would look and if the spacing would work. I then thought about what colours would work well for it. I decided I would like a limited colour palette for this design so I tried to create a vivid striking design using only a few colours. I then redrew and finalised my sketch before going to my final colour version. 

Do you have a favorite feature of the sock design?

I really like the bold colour scheme I decided on!

Ankle or crew socks for preference?

Ankle socks, for sure!
