Founded in 1987, PIH grew out of a community-based health project in Cange, Haiti. That project—Zanmi Lasante (“Partners In Health” in Haitian Creole)—focused on delivering high-quality care to people living with HIV/AIDS in rural communities. 

From those early efforts, PIH has developed one of the world’s most effective models of global health equity, expanding care and support to some of the world’s most vulnerable populations and influencing local, national, and global health policy.

PIH was founded on the belief that health is a human right, not a privilege. The organization partners with governments and communities to deliver high-quality care and build strong health systems that last.

Working in 11 locations, including Haiti, Peru, Rwanda, Mexico, Sierra Leone, and the Navajo Nation, PIH provides direct care to millions while helping ensure that future generations can access their right to health. Through this work, PIH advances health equity as a shared global responsibility.
