They’ve illustrated books, developed packaging, designed murals, and created wayyy more in their own right. In Meg’s words, she likes to “celebrate playful curiosity and wonder” in her work!

An Interview With Awesome Socks Club's July Artist

In a sentence, how would you describe your work?
My work is bold, lively, and full of character(s).

Do you have any favorite themes you enjoy working with?
I really enjoy playing with nature, animals, and mythology, but I have been trying to think of ways to mix the fantastic and the mundane with a good dose of humor as of late!

What mediums do you like to work in?
I love experimenting with all sorts of traditional media-- brush and ink, paint, oil pastel, collage, you name it! My practice is hybrid so I tend to try a lot of traditional media and then work with it digitally to make something new.

If you were an environmental storytelling skeleton, how do you think you'd be found?
I like to think I would be in a cave surrounded by a lot of weird ephemera I've been hauling around from my explorations. But maybe I'd be stuck in a hole I couldn't climb out of or in the belly of a beast, I'm pretty clumsy.

Do you have a dream project you'd like to work on someday?
It would be really fun to design for a space like a fun cocktail bar, work on a board game, or a theater set! I love when my work comes to life in different physical forms.

What drew you to the imagery of the sea dragon?
Dragons are always really fun to design; so many weird shapes to push and pull. I grew up by the ocean and love going to aquariums so I often return back to that imagery, so it was fun to riff on the leafy sea dragon!

Can you talk a little about your design process? Where do you draw your inspiration from, and how do you work shop your design from draft to final?
I love to soak up a lot of ideas from the world around me; when I start sketching ideas out I work with more blobby forms so I can focus on shape rather than detail, then try and set a palette and build with those colors in mind. It changes a lot as I go though and start pushing and pulling forms with color, and I often push from expected color ideas to more out-there palettes. I like surprising myself either with coming at something from a different point of view, or working with unexpected colors, or a technique that is a little unpredictable. For a design like this, the added challenge is designing something that needs to be simpler-- readability is important and I love to add tons of little details! So this was fun to hold back and see how it goes.

Do you have a favorite feature of the sock design?
Probably the jellyfish! They were fun to try and figure out simply.

Ankle or crew socks for preference?
Crew socks! Ankles always slip down my heels when I walk.
