Where it Comes From

The Sun Basin

The Sun Basin is a remote valley cradled in the mountains of Missoula, MT. Wind catches words, moments, and memories, sweeps them into the sky, and settles them gently into the basin, allowing us to gather them up as inspiration and present them to Botanie, our local soap making partners. Botanie then distills the memories, mixes them in small batches with gorgeous natural ingredients, and turns out bars of soap that are good for your skin and your soul.

    Still works for the face!

    (I’m reviewing this after receiving the free product at launch)

    The first two things I’ll preface is

    1) I actually wanted to try the conditioner bar but, understandably, they were already gone. At least they’re on sale now!

    2) I didn’t notice this was a *body* shave bar until I got it. I thought it and the cedar one were just two different scents of general shave bars. I’m not really sure what the difference between them is, since I only opted to get this one.

    That being said, I think it’s still great! I don’t really shave much on my body anymore, but I had to take care of my face and neck so so bad. The only problem I had was o didn’t have a fresh razor to give it its best chance, and took the last picture in the morning since that was more indicative of how my skin would look out in the world. Actually if anything, the gentleness of it on skin probably saved me from the terrible razor I used.

    I’ve been using it since (with a new razor). It’s easy to apply and much like the soaps and shampoos you don’t need a lot. The scent is nice, very evergreen, though I hope there are more options soon for those who anre sensitive to or simply dislike this one. Its suds also seem a lot more effective for washing away shaved hairs than shaving creams I’ve tried, too.

    I think when it runs out I will try the ACTUAL facial shave bar to see if there’s much of a difference.

    Smoothing Lather and Excellent Scent

    I was thrilled to be extended an opportunity to review this shaving soap bar. I’ve been experimenting recently with shaving creams, gels, razors with built-in glide, and plain ol’ body wash to shave with, so I loved this eco- and travel-friendly option of a bar. It’s smaller than a regular bar of soap but honestly is the perfect palm-size to rub and lather wherever you need to. The packaging is efficient and the soap smells great!

    It lathers better rubbing between hands and then putting hands to skin than it does rubbing it directly on the area you are trying to shave. The lather itself though isn’t foamy or soapy; it is smooth in a way that makes my razor glide but also makes the tub floor slippery - so perhaps don’t try and use it to shave your legs while standing in the shower. :) I did notice I had a small pimple pop up after using it the first time, but there was only one and only from the first use.

    nice shave bar

    with the preface that i don’t often use shave-specific products, i think this bar is nice. it emulsifies quickly and is relatively easy to shave with—no nicks or catching anywhere (i shave basically only my legs, occasionally, and never my underarms). that said, it leaves a soapy-squeaky clean feeling rather than moisturized. it’s not my favorite feeling personally, but probably comes with the bar format territory. all in all though, happy to have this as an option in my shower and love that there’s no plastic packaging involved and that all the proceeds go to charity.

    Great!

    Very nice! As explained in the directions, I find it works best to lather on my hands first and then apply to skin, rather than using the bar directly on my skin. It feels smooth and not gunky or gloopy on the razor. And it feels like the bar will last me a long time, so I do think it's a good value for the price.
