Where it Comes From

The Sun Basin

The Sun Basin is a remote valley cradled in the mountains of Missoula, MT. Wind catches words, moments, and memories, sweeps them into the sky, and settles them gently into the basin, allowing us to gather them up as inspiration and present them to Botanie, our local soap making partners. Botanie then distills the memories, mixes them in small batches with gorgeous natural ingredients, and turns out bars of soap that are good for your skin and your soul.

    nice shave bar

    with the preface that i don’t often use shave-specific products, i think this bar is nice. it emulsifies quickly and is relatively easy to shave with—no nicks or catching anywhere (i shave basically only my legs, occasionally, and never my underarms). that said, it leaves a soapy-squeaky clean feeling rather than moisturized. it’s not my favorite feeling personally, but probably comes with the bar format territory. all in all though, happy to have this as an option in my shower and love that there’s no plastic packaging involved and that all the proceeds go to charity.

    Very nice! As explained in the directions, I find it works best to lather on my hands first and then apply to skin, rather than using the bar directly on my skin. It feels smooth and not gunky or gloopy on the razor. And it feels like the bar will last me a long time, so I do think it's a good value for the price.

    Great Shaving Bar! Better Shape?

    I've tried a couple different shaving soap options over the years, from normal bar soap to shaving cream, and this body shave bar is definitely the best of both worlds. It's less messy and doesn't need to be applied as often as shaving cream, and it doesn't leave my skin feeling dried out like bar soap does. It does the job without me really thinking about it at all.

    The scent is more peppermint pine than rosemary (which is a win for me), and the texture, once lathered, is very smooth. While pricey compared to off-brand bar soap, the body shave bar works better for shaving, and supporting the Good Store cause makes it worth the cost to me. I'll likely be buying another bar once this one runs out.

    My only major criticism is that the shape wasn't fully thought through for a shave bar. The sharp edges make it uncomfortable to use in tight spaces, like the armpits. I'm sure this will be less of a problem the longer I use it, but a rounder shape might be a bit easier to apply right out of the box.

    My new must have

    This is so much better than shave gel (or soap!) and I am a convert. I did 1-2 passes on damp legs in the bath and it worked so well. With the gel, the razor wipes it away and you have to redistribute—this _lasts_!

    It doesn’t really lather, which is fine, and rinses away well when you’re done. If you do use this in the shower, I’d keep it out of direct water, since I can see that eating the bar up much faster. The scent is minty, but not strong and doesn’t linger after you rinse it off.
