Surprisingly Powerful Things With Surprisingly Normal Body Parts

The Awesome Socks Club has been a steady, monthly engine powering real progress. Silly socks with serious impact. | By Aly Krajewski.

We need to talk to you about butts. And feet. (Stick with us here.)

To get there, we gotta start with good news:

If you’ve been around for a while, you might know that as of mid-February, the Maternal Center of Excellence in Sierra Leone is open. Like, open open: Patients are being seen, babies are being born; It’s not a concept anymore. It’s a legit building with people inside it doing lifesaving work. Which is wild! To think that what was an idea for close to ten years has finally come to the beginning of its reality is so so so cool.

And one of the wildest parts of the center’s story boils down to: a meaningful chunk of this all happened because tens of thousands of people decided to subscribe to buying and wearing silly socks.

That’s not the only reason. A lot of people did a lot of work over a lot of years. But the Awesome Socks Club has been this steady, monthly engine powering some progress. And last year, we also launched Awesome Undies, because why should socks be the only item in your dresser doing the philanthropic heavy lifting? But both the Socks + Undies clubs offer similar, cool outputs: You get wearable art from an independent artist. Profits go to charity. Repeat.

Now, quick transparency: inventory is hard. We have to guesstimate months in advance how many smalls, mediums, larges, etc., the world will want. Sometimes we guess wrong. Some sizes disappear instantly. Some hang out in the warehouse, like, “Is anyone coming to get me?”

So, here’s where your appendages enter the picture. We would like to liberate every sock and every pair of undies currently in the DFTBA warehouse and send them into the loving embrace(?) of human legs and human butts.

You Can Join The Impact

This month, if new members join the Awesome Socks Club or Awesome Undies Club, they can get 50% off their first pair with the code SHAREAPAIR. A super low-commitment way to try it out and get some new duds for your spring wardrobe. The 50% applies to that first pair when you join, and then future pairs are full price (which is how we keep the whole thing sustainable). Half off the first pair, regular price after that. Simple!

Now, you may be saying, “I’m already a member, and my feet and butt are just fine!” First of all, thank you. You are literally part of why maternal healthcare infrastructure exists in a place that has historically been deeply underserved. Second: this is your cue! Do you have a friend who is thoughtful, curious, likes cool art, enjoys mail, or simply has feet? Or a butt? Invite them. Send them the link, send them the code, tell them the Good Store story, let them know about how much you like your own Awesome Socks + Undies.

Also, and this is a genuinely helpful thing, if someone’s size is sold out, have them sign up for the wait-list to get notified when their size is back in stock. That info is incredibly useful. It tells us what to actually make more of instead of best-guessing and stabbing-in-the-dark. We’ve got some sizes already selling out pretty fast; help us sell out the rest of the sizes, too!

This whole thing that Good Store does works because a lot of people like you do small things consistently. Like wearing socks. And wearing underwear. And telling a friend. Repeat.

Let’s keep doing surprisingly powerful things with surprisingly normal body parts.
