Shampoo Bars: Much Less Waste, No Less Clean

Sun Basin solid shampoo bars are more than just “a neat idea” | By Malikai Smith

Alright, alright. Before the accusations about unreliable narrators start to fly and my shampoo qualifications are questioned, let’s nip it in the bud. Yes, I’m bald; but here’s something you may not know: bald people still use shampoo. Well… my genre of bald people do, at least.

I’m your classic horseshoe-of-hair, male pattern baldness bald (thanks for those genes, Grandpa). In other words, I still have plenty of hair that grows back as fully as it did when I was younger, and in the 5–6 days between shaves, that hair needs cleaning. I also have a beard to keep clean, but that’s not as funny as male pattern baldness.

Hopefully that clears up my credentials as a shampoo user. Now we can move on to the meat and potatoes of today’s discussion.

Clean Hair Doesn’t Have to Mean Dirty Waste

Clean hair doesn’t need to come at the cost of dirty waterways, bulging landfills, and tremendous waste. It’s kind of funny (albeit in a sad way) to think that for tens of thousands of years, humans had just as much hair and managed to clean it just fine… without millions of plastic bottles piling up as a result.

Well, we’re not captive consumers here. It’s 2026, and we’ve got options.

I’m not sure what my many-times-great grandfather—the progenitor of my male pattern baldness (whose time saved washing hair was clearly an evolutionary advantage)—was using to clean his remaining hair. But I do know what’s available to us today, and I’d bet we’re more spoiled for choice than ever.

Choices that are:

  • Non-toxic
  • Free of single-use plastics
  • Effective at cleaning your hair
  • Actually smell good

Why Shampoo Bars Are a Better Alternative

Shampoo bars are one of those simple swaps that make a real difference. Instead of liquid shampoo in plastic bottles, you’re using a solid bar that lasts longer and creates less waste. On average, a single shampoo bar can replace 2–3 plastic bottles per year. That’s a small shift with a surprisingly meaningful environmental impact.

Sun Basin Soap: A Sustainable Shampoo Option

Sun Basin Soaps are made in the Big Sky State and embody the crisp, clean, refreshing scents you’d expect from a place as natural and pristine as Montana.

If you order some, here’s what you can expect:

  • Shipped in cardboard packaging
  • Compostable boxes
  • All-natural, non-toxic ingredients
  • Zero single-use plastic

Like I said: we’ve got options.

Small Changes, Real Impact

There are countless little opportunities to do small bits of good, and in this case, it’s only a click away. Do you understand what this means for me? I’ve got so little hair left, a bar could very well last me the next 50 years!

Now I’m helping the environment, saving myself trips to the grocery store, and getting out of the shower just as clean as I was before making the switch.

Not bad for a bald guy.
