Awesome Socks Club’s May 2026 Artist: Jordan Mitchell

This May’s Awesome artist takes us out into the wild unknown.

This month at Awesome Socks Club, we’re jazzed to highlight Jordan Mitchell (he/him) as our featured designer! Jordan is a freelance background painter and color designer based in LA whose mastery of shade, light, and scene is almost as impressive as his designs for this May’s socks and undies. You can learn more about Jordan’s work at his website (and even grab a few art prints for yourself if you’re so inclined).

An Interview With Awesome Socks Club's May Artist

What first drew you to art?

Honestly, an overactive imagination. One of my first memories is using up all my dad's printer paper, drawing everything from fire trucks to trees to dragons, or anything I was watching on television. It was my high school history teacher's encouragement that really drew me to art. She gave me my first commission at 16, designing a yearbook page. She pushed me to give this art thing a shot.

What is your favorite project you’ve ever worked on?

Besides the socks, it would have to be when I was first asked to work for the NY Times. I did an illustration during the first year of Covid for their Thanksgiving issue. The illustration was about things we are thankful for, even during those hard times. I drew a father and daughter playing outside with their masks.

How do you hope audiences experience your work?

I hope when people look at my work, it gives them the same feeling of watching their favorite comfort movie. Or that it gives them the feeling of nostalgia. I love cinematic colors. I base angles and focal points of my pictures on movies and photography.

Tell us about your design process for your sock design. What inspired the landscape and colors?

I came up with the idea of painting Joshua Tree because it’s one of my favorite places in the world. My very first time taking a vacation as an adult was to Joshua Tree, it’s such a refreshing place to relax. Being there gave me something positive to focus on during the LA fires. The colors made me want to bring out my inner Bob Ross. For my socks, I tried to distill this quiet and profound place into 7 colors.

What are some things that keep you inspired?

Movies and animation. I have a big love for both of them. Music is also a big inspiration for me. And lastly, people and their stories. I wanted to be an anthropologist when I was younger. People and culture, how we do things together and to each other, really fascinates me.

What’s your preference: Crew or ankle socks?

I’m a big crew socks guy.
