Princess Bizares

Kumusta! My name is Princess Bizares (she/they) and I'm a multi-disciplinary artist based in Los Angeles Country. I'm a background painter in animation by day and an illustrator/ceramicist/sewist by night. I love learning, experimenting, nature, and my Filipino culture.

In a sentence, how would you describe your work?
My work is whimsical, imperfect, and cute!

Do you have any favorite themes you enjoy working with?
My favorite themes are nature and culture! Both play a big role in my life and thus are often present in my personal art practice.

What mediums do you like to work in?
Too many! But also not enough! I love working with paper collage, watercolors, colored pencils, and gouache. I love tactile mediums. Aside from my illustration craft, I also enjoy throwing pottery on the wheel, fiber arts, and film photography. I'm constantly curious about different processes and mediums and love learning.

Do you have a dream project you'd like to work on someday?
I would love to write and illustrate a children's book about birds or birding someday!

What drew you to the imagery of the heron?
I love birding and see Great Blue Herons pretty often! Although they're a fairly common bird where I live, I'm always in awe of their great size and flight. They're beautiful birds!

Can you talk a little about your design process? Where do you draw your inspiration from, and how do you workshop your design from draft to final?
Whenever I'm designing something, especially when an animal is involved, I like familiarizing myself with the shape and special characteristics of my subject. In this case, I drew several iterations of herons until I felt like I had simplified it down to basic but recognizable features. After that, I start creating thumbnails, continue with rough sketches, then line work, and onward to painting. I draw much of my inspiration from nature and love studying the natural world around me.

Do you have a favorite feature of the sock design?
My favorite feature is the heron, of course! It was the most fun for me to draw, from ideation to final. BUT! I also really love the silly little frog at the bottom of the sock as a secondary character.

Ankle or crew socks for preference?
You can never go wrong with crew socks!
